Front Fender Vents

I have a set of carbon fiber front fender vents. I was originally going to blend them into the body, install some form of screen to protect them and paint them body color. That looks great, but they can get damaged and that could be a real mess to fix.

Cutting them into the body looks very race, but the upper face won’t line up with the top of the nose and it’s very difficult to get the gaps to look good.

Since I have a good scan of the nose, I’m considering doing the following:

  • 3D print a router template to make a perfect cut out on the upper face. It would bolt to the vent openings before they were cut out.

  • 3D print a router template for a cut out in the nose to fit the trimmed carbon fiber piece. It would bolt to the body outside of the cutout so the holes would need to be filled. Since both the vent and the cutout were trimmed using a template, the gaps should be close to perfect.

  • Bond mounting tabs to the back of the carbon fiber vent such that the two faces are parallel.

  • Figure out how to fasten the tabs to the nose. Ideally self-locking nut plates are bonded to the inside of nose so that they are not visible on the exterior of the car. DIAGRAM WITH PICTURE OF FASTENER
